The Soft Hackled Streamer

MATERIALS LIST
- Hook - Any 4XL nymph or streamer hook size 2 or 4. Daiichi 1750 or Mustad 79580 work well.
- Thread - Black 6/0.
- Tail - Pearl Flashabou or Krystal Flash .
- Wing - Rear Half - Maribou Blood Feather the ones with the small stem. In this case olive.
- Wing - Front Half - Maribou Blood Feather the ones with the small stem. In this case black.
- Hackle - Mallard Flank, Extra long.
TYING INSTRUCTION
- Secure thread to hook and build good thread base over 1/2 of the hook shank.
- Tail - At the middle of the hook shank tie in 3 or 4 strands of pearl Flashabou about the same length as the hook shank and trim the excess butts close to the hook shank.
- Wing - Back Half - Tie in a whole blood maribou feather at the tail tie in point and with close wraps advance slightly less than 1/2 way to the hooks eye. Secure with tying thread and trim the excess butts close to the hook shank.
- Wing - Front Half - Tie in a whole blood maribou feather at the front of the back wing tie in point and with close wraps advance to the front of the hook leaving enough space for the hackle and head. Secure with tying thread and trim excess the butts close to the hook shank.
- Hackle - Tie in an Extra long mallard flank feather, trim the butt close to the hook shank, and wrap 2 turns while pulling the hackle fibers toward the rear of the fly, secure with tying thread, and trim the excess close to the hook shank. Form a tapered head with tying thread, whip finish and if you like cement. That's All Folks!!!
HISTORY AND ADDITIONAL NOTES
Jack Gartside originated the Soft Hackled Streamer. The original tie is much more sparse. This is my big fish fly having accounted for 6 trout in excess of 10 pounds (4.5 Kg).
