TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Insert a hook into the vise and build good thread base.

  2. Tail - Tie in 5 or 6 strands of Black Krystal Flash slightly into the bend of the hook extending 3/8" beyond the bend of the hook.

  3. Shell Back - Trim the 3/8" (9.525 mm) wide strip of black foam to a shallow point and tie in at the tail tie in point extending to the back of the fly over the tail.

  4. Ribbing - Make a loop of tying thread long enough to rib the body plus secure the shell back.

  5. Body - Tie in the orange sparkle yarn immediately in front of the back material and wrap forward about 2/3 hook's shank length. Secure with tying thread and trim the excess close to the hook's shank.

  6. Shell Back Again - Pull the shell back forward over the top of the body and secure with tying thread at the front of the body. Trim the excess foam strip and leave approximately 1/8" (3.175 mm) clear of the tie in.

  7. Ribbing - Wrap 5 turns of ribbing around the entire fly to mold the shell back around the body yarn material to leave a thin strip of orange between the sides of the foam back at the underside of the fly.

  8. Thorax Lower - Reverse the fly/hook in the vise (bottom side up). Trim a 3/8" (9.525 mm) foam strip to a point and tie in even with the tie in point of the upper thorax and cover all the thread wraps from the body, shell back and upper thorax tie in. The foam strips should be angling toward the back of the fly.

  9. Wing - Tie in by the butts a cleaned and stacked 3/4 pencil sized clump of light elk hair a bit in front of the lower thorax strip (bottom side). The wing's tips should be even with the hook's bend. Secure and cover the butts with tying thread wraps. Advance the tying thread to within 1/8" (3.175 mm) of the hooks eye.

  10. Thorax Lower - Divide the wing material into equal parts and pull the lower thorax strip between the divided wing material and secure with tying thread 1/8" (3.175 mm)behind the hooks eye, trim close, and cover the foam butt with tying thread wraps. Turn fly right side up in the vise.

  11. Thorax Upper - Pull the upper thorax strip to the front of the fly and secure with tying thread 1/8" (3.175 mm) behind the hooks eye. Whip finish in front of the butt of the foam strip. Trim the foam strip butt and leave 1/8" (3.175 mm)clear of the tie in. That's All Folks!!!
